During the KBC Sicily and KBC Kite Event Sicily, you’ll stay at Villa Vajarassa—a wonderful former winery nestled among olive groves and vineyards. The villa has been completely renovated and converted into a unique bed-and-breakfast. You’ll be staying here not far from the lagoon; it’s not right on the spot, but it’s very easy to get to.
Here, you’ll also have the chance to socialize with other KBC guests after kitesurfing and wingfoiling. In the evenings, we gather around the long table in the idyllic courtyard. And from here, it’s not far at all to the cafés and restaurants in Marsala. Come join us in Bella Italia!
Prices
All rooms feature a double bed (160x190 cm) with a full-length mattress and a private bathroom with a sink, toilet, and shower. High chairs and cribs are available for young children.
In the old part of Villa Vajarassa, you’ll find beautiful, unique rooms with antique furniture and ornate Sicilian tiles. Some of the rooms have a balcony with a fantastic view of the vineyards and the lagoon, and some even have access to the rooftop terrace.
In 2021, the villa’s old barn was completely renovated. Beautiful, fully equipped triple, double, and single rooms have been created here across two floors—each with a balcony or terrace overlooking the inland vineyards.
The rooms are named after the prevailing winds of the region and the surrounding islands.

The Vajarassa Story
The Settlers
Due to its central location in the Mediterranean, Sicily has always been of great importance. Sicily’s port cities served as strategically important hubs for seafaring and trade. This made Sicily a coveted target for conquerors, who, after a successful conquest, often remained on the island, intermingled with the local population, and left their mark on the culture. Sicily was mostly ruled from afar by the respective conquering nation. The island was rarely politically independent. Between the 16th and 18th centuries, Sicily was dominated by Spain. The population had a high demand for grain. Thus, the Sicilian government issued the “Licentia populandi”—a permit allowing selected nobles to establish, settle, and farm small village settlements in the then-uncultivated interior.
Baglio?
At that time, the chosen barons built “baglios” (or, in Sicilian, “bagghius”)—fortified farmsteads with a large courtyard located on a large estate. The landowner himself lived on this farm, as did the farmers who worked there either seasonally or year-round. Therefore, the baglio had to have numerous living quarters for its inhabitants, as well as stables for the animals and storage areas for grain.
The Agata Family
The influential Agata family was known for its wine production (particularly Grillo) and owned the entire coastal area of the Spanish part of the island. The family was therefore nicknamed “Vajarassa”—literally “fat cow”—a nickname often given to particularly wealthy individuals. This is how Baglio Vajarassa, built around the year 800, got its name. The Baglio housed the wine production until 1990, when the villa was converted into a guesthouse. Today, the direct descendants Marina Agate and her husband Salvatore welcome you to the Bed & Breakfast Villa Baglio Vajarassa.
The Wines of Villa Vajarassa
Baglio Vajarassa has its own wine, which is, of course, made from grapes grown on the vines surrounding the estate.
Grillo
The typical dry white wine
The Grillo grape is an indigenous, ancient white variety with yellowish, medium-sized to large, spherical berries featuring a firm skin and a fruity flavor. It is very hardy and thrives exceptionally well in hot climates. This is likely why it has a much higher sugar content than other white grapes, as well as a particularly aromatic flavor. Not all soils are suitable for this grape variety. Consequently, it is found primarily only around Marsala. The variety is among Sicily’s approved DOC wines, which attests to its high quality; nevertheless, Grillo wines are comparatively affordable. Grillo is a dry white wine with a pale yellow color. Its aroma is intense and rich in fruity notes, such as lemon and orange, with a freshness that unfolds in a round and full-bodied manner. Some wine connoisseurs describe the bouquet as floral, while others detect notes of pear or almond. Grillo wines generally have a fairly high alcohol content (sometimes even over 16% ABV) and can therefore be aged well for a long time (in some cases, several decades). Grillo pairs excellently with Italian cuisine.
Catarratto Grillo
The dry white wine blend
Catarratto Bianco is also a widely grown grape variety in the province of Trapani. It has large, compact clusters and small berries with thick skins. Catarratto is usually blended with Grillo, resulting in a full-bodied wine. The high acidity positively influences the wine’s aromatic and flavor profile. One can detect a scent of white flowers.
Nero d'Avola
The dry red wine from Sicily
The dark, almost black Nero d’Avola grapes are a typical Sicilian and very noble variety. Their flavor varies depending on the growing region. In the areas around Marsala, they are fruitier and sweeter. The wine has a deep, dark red color, and its flavor reflects the intense sunlight of Sicily. One can detect aromas of cherry, blackberry, cassis, and even pepper, cedar, and leather. The wine is very pleasant and pairs well with many occasions.
Map of Villa Vajarassa
